Low Memory on Tills - Potential Fixes
Recently we have seen an increase in the number of clients reporting issues when it comes to RAM usage above 95%. This then causes FireFox to crash, not respond, and unexpected behaviour. You can follow the steps below to try and resolve it.
Checking the RAM usage
Follow the steps below to check the RAM usage
Double check the RAM usage by going into the Task Manager
You can go into the Task Manager by right clicking on the taskbar, and then choosing Task Manager
You can also press ALT + CRTL + DEL on the keyboard, and then choosing Task Manager
You can also right click on the Start Menu and Choose Task Manager
2. Then choose More Details
3. Then click on the Performance tab and you can see the Memory usage from there
4. Restarting the till/computer will reset the computer and allow the client to continue working.
Increasing the Virtual Memory
Sometimes the Virtual Memory options are not enough by standard to allow the tills to continue working. You can follow the steps below to do this.
Press the Start button, and then click on Settings (Cog wheel icon)
2. Then click on “System”
3. Then choose “About” in the left hand side bar (Note; you may need to scroll down to see this option)
4. Under the “Related Settings” area, click on “System Info”, then “Advanced system settings” or simply just “Advanced system settings”
5. Click onto the “Advanced” tab, and under the performance section, click on “Settings”
6. Then click on the Advanced tab
7. Under the Virtual Memory section, click on the change button
8. Uncheck the box for “Automatically manage paging files size for all drives”
9. Check the box for Custom Size, and then fill in the initial size and maximum size
Most Box Tills have 4GB of memory. Therefore, our initial size should 1.5 times the maximum, and then the maximum should be 3 times the maximum. You can use the settings in the screenshot below for this
10. Click on Set, then Ok, and then Ok again
11. Restart the device
12. Inform the client that you have made changes that should resolve the issue. It will be a case of keeping an eye on this.
